Father (Monsignor) Anton, with the help of others in the Armenian community in the early 1980’s realised that we needed an Armenian School in Sydney if we were to survive as a recognisable community into the next century. He realised, also, that the Armenian Church (the first founded in Christendom in 301 AD) needed to support the educational aspirations of all Armenians, if it were to remain relevant in their lives.
The School is “owned” by the St Gregory’s Armenian School Inc. Association. The Association is made up of all Armenians (and non-Armenians) interested in the furthering of the School’s aims and is run by its Constitution. The School’s day-to-day activities are run by a Board of Management, elected from the Association’s members.
The School initially had Father Anton as its Principal for 19 years until he returned to Armenia to continue his Mission. [Father Anton continues, in a largely honorary capacity, as the head of the Board].
Because of the School’s wider aims in the community, many of the functions of the School are determined, arranged, and carried out by volunteers, along with the support of all the teaching staff.
Mrs Vicki Vartanians has been the School's Vice Principal since Father Anton's departure in 2002.
Mrs Christine Ciccone has been the Primary School Co-ordinator since 1998.
Many members of the Armenian Community have helped to get the School where it is now. The early years saw many challenges faced and overcome - all with the financial and (often) physical support of many volunteers - Armenian and Non-Armenian. Continuing through with the early hard work of the broader community, others continue the tradition of silent and painstaking effort - both physical and financial - that all Schools need. Our school is blessed with continued support from members of the wider community who see it as their duty, right and obligation (to the memory of the many Armenian martyrs of the last century) that their ancient, Christian, Armenian culture is supported in Australia.
