Senior High Curriculum

Years 11 and 12 (Stage 6) conclude the Senior Years for academic success at St Gregory's Armenian School.

Students study a pattern of courses that is designed to provide them with the necessary background of knowledge, skills and understanding required for success in the Higher School Certificate as well as prepares them for post-secondary opportunities.

There are two types of courses that can be studied in Years 11&12:

1) Board-developed courses are developed by the Board of Studies NSW which provides a syllabus for each course which includes: the course objectives, structure, content and outcomes; specific course requirements; assessment requirements; sample examination papers and marking guidelines; and performance scale. All students entered for the Higher School Certificate who are studying these courses at the College follow these syllabuses. These courses are examined externally at the end of the HSC course and can count towards the calculation of a student's Universities Admissions Index (UAI).

2) Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses can be Board-developed or Board-endorsed. VET courses are offered as part of the Higher School Certificate. These courses enable students to study courses that are relevant to industry needs and have clear links to post-secondary destinations. These courses allow students to gain both Higher School Certificate qualifications and accreditation with industry and the workplace as part of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). This framework is recognised throughout Australia and helps students to move easily between the training sector and employment. These courses have a specific workplace component and a minimum number of hours students spend in the workplace or a simulated workplace at St Gregory's Armenian School. Students receive special documentation showing the competencies gained.

All courses offered for the Higher School Certificate at the St Gregory's Armenian School have a unit value. Courses may have a value of 1 unit or 2 units. Most courses have a 2 unit value. A 2 unit course involves class time of approximately 4 hours per week (120 hours per year) and a one unit course involves approximately 2 hours per week (60 hours per year).

Extended study is available in a number of courses for the Higher School Certificate. Extension courses build on the content of the 2 unit course and carry an additional value of 1 unit. These extension courses require HSC students to work beyond the standard of the 2 unit course and are available in English, Mathematics, and History, subject to student interest and ability. English and Mathematics extension courses are also available at Preliminary (Year 11) and HSC (Year 12) levels. In the case of English Extension and/or Mathematics Extension, students must study the Preliminary Extension Course (Extension 1) before proceeding to the HSC Extension Course (Extension 2).

Candidates for the Higher School Certificate must undertake a pattern of study comprising at least 12 units of Preliminary courses and 10 units of HSC courses. The Preliminary and HSC Board-developed courses offered at St Gregory's Armenian School are:
